Bracken County Kentucky School Census Records Volume II 1896 & 1897 by Rosemarie Pell
Rosemarie B. Pell has finished two new publications which will be added to the list of publications offered by the Bracken County Historical Society. These two new publications list the school census reports from 1894 to 1897. Since the 1890 US Federal Census was destroyed by fire, it is difficult to find records that list names and ages for children during that time period. The School Census books can help fill in the gap of the destroyed 1890 census as they list the names of parents, guardians and children between 6 and 20 years of age. Starting in the 1896 reports some of the entries even show the birthdates and the parents’ ages and year of marriage. The school district names and numbers are not listed as these changed often and there were students from numerous towns in a school district; however town names and/or addresses were given with the student on each form and these are included. The school census reports are in two volumes which are Bracken County School Census Records 1894 & 1895 and Bracken County School Census Volume 2 1896 & 1897. Each volume sells for $30.00.
The book sells for $30.00 plus $3.00 shipping and handling.

Grapevine Dispatch the Voice of Antislavery Messages by Caroline R. Miller
Safe houses, trustworthy individuals, pathways, abandoned shelters, and unattended skiffs—these were crucial pieces of information that was spread, through word or song, from plantation to plantation by way of the “grapevine.” Throughout the Borderlands, this communication would help the slave to find freedom, by way of the Underground Railroad.
The conductors and abolitionists on both sides of the Ohio river–consisting of slaves, and free men of color, white and black residents, religious men and other sympathetic citizens—were likely to suffer bodily inflictions, imprisonment, and monetary loss for aiding these fugitives in their flight from slavery and quest for freedom.
Caroline Miller, through Grapevine Dispatch, skillfully relates their stories through interviews, newspaper accounts, court cases, government records, and other published and unpublished accounts, so that these times, and these people are not forgotten.

Veterans of Bracken County by Caroline Miller and John Workman
The Bracken County Property Valuation Administration and the Bracken County Historical Society joined efforts to produce a volume of images of men and women who have served their nation in the military, whether active duty, reserves, or national guard. Time passes quickly, and these persons and their contributions might be forgotten. With this book, these offices are giving the public a permanent source of information about the veterans of our county.
Although records of soldiers for some wars were sparse, the volume includes information that was located at the County Clerk’s office, the Historical Society Archives, and past and present county newspapers. Introductory information about each of the twelve wars was included, along with maps, so that everyone could understand where some of the soldiers were fighting and for what reasons.
The book sells for $25.00 plus $3.00 shipping and handling.
